Is a Short Term Mission Trip For Me?

Why do a short term mission trip?

The Gospel tells us to go into all the world and spread God's Word. A mission trip is the Gospel in action. God uses short term mission trips to change lives -- both of the people who go and of those whom they serve. Participants from previous missions will gladly share with you how much they have grown in their relationship with Christ, how much they learned about community, and how they were inspired and humbled by the people of El Salvador. Lives have been formed through these short term mission experiences.

So often we are called to become stewards of our faith. This is a chance for you to answer that call. Your time and effort are your donation. Don't miss out on your chance to be part of this experience and become restored, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Who should consider a short-term mission trip?

We are blessed to be a blessing. God does not work through a vacuum: He works through real people. In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus tells us we are the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world". EVERYONE is called to be a disciple in one way or another. Participants from previous trips could be categorized as follows:

Families with kids: School-age children assist adults with the building of the homes for needy families, as well as community activities. They have the opportunity to meet and bond with the local children. They can carry water and bricks to adults who may be working on a building site. Their presence on a mission team will open doors and soften hearts. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to bond with your child. No TV, no Gameboy, no phone calls; essentially, nothing to interfere with your time with your child, and an important teaching opportunity.

Single adults: Persons 18 years of age and up who may not feel comfortable striking off alone for weeks at a time will enjoy the fellowship and adventure of working closely with a group of mission-minded Catholics who will bond as lifelong friends during the trip.

"Boomers" and "Empty-Nesters" (perhaps ex-hippies and Peace Corps types) are likely to have stopped thinking about children's tuition bills, or acquiring more "stuff" that eventually will fill their garages. They are thinking about how to enrich their lives by helping others. And volunteer vacations, sometimes called voluntourism, fit their desire to make a difference.

Anyone looking for meaning in an overwhelming world: Are you fortunate enough to be able to leave work and family for a week? If so, this is a unique opportunity for you to give a week and gain a missionary experience that will last a lifetime.

It truly is a life enhancing experience. As one past participant said, "As a stay at home mom I find myself pulled in so many different directions: my children, my husband, my home, the school, etc. I really felt blessed to have one thing to do for a week. I had one job. I worked hard all day and at the end of the day, I was finished. It gave me a sense of purpose. It felt wonderful to help those who were truly in need. And their oneness with God is contagious. He is their focus. It made me realize that I need to put God first in my life and everything else will follow. God will take care of my needs."

Serving Christ Through His PoorOver 30 people from St. Hilary parish and surrounding parishes just returned from a July 9-17 mission to the impoverished village of Mizata in El Salvador. This village was chosen because it is one of the poorest within this very poor country, yet it has a very strong and devout Catholic population. These missionaries worked along side the local community on the construction of a youth center and two more homes. More>
